WHO ARE WE?
The St. Chux Derby Chix are part of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), a national governing body for female-only, skater-owned, flat-track roller derby leagues. The league was founded in August of 2009, started bouting in 2010 and became a full WFTDA league in September of 2012. SCDC is currently a Class A league.
WHERE DO WE PLAY?
The St. Chux Derby Chix hold our local bouts at Lamborghini Gold Coast Athletic Centre in St. Charles, Missouri. You will also find us regularly traveling all around to play against other leagues and to take part in tournaments and invitationals.
IS THIS LIKE OLD-SCHOOL ROLLER DERBY?
This is not your grandma’s roller derby! Modern roller derby differs in many ways from the derby that used to air on television. Some of the biggest differences are the track (we play on a flat track not a banked track) the fights (elbows, punches, and tripping are illegal) and the choreography (today’s derby is REAL nothing is staged.) Visit this website to see a nifty video that teaches you the basics.
DO WE GET PAID?
We wish! We are all unpaid skaters who not only practice and bout, but do all the work to keep the league running. We pay monthly dues and also have to buy our own gear and uniforms. All of our refs, NSOs, photographers, and announcers are also volunteers who help us out for the love of the sport. Like many of the all-female, skater-owned leagues around the country, we donate a portion of our bout proceeds to local charities, and spend time volunteering at events and fundraisers.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO JOIN?
Skaters must be 18 years of age and older. There is no upper age limit—we have skaters just out of high school as well as women in their forties. Many of us have children. We even have a mother-daughter duo skating for us! Professionally, we range from teachers and chiropractors to students and hairdressers. In other words, we’re a cross-section of the modern, successful, strong female population. If you or someone you know is interested in joining us, visit our Join Us page for more information.
WHAT ELSE DO WE DO?
We like to spread the love and hold events for different causes. The St. Chux Derby Chix are dedicated to our local communities and charities and we invest our time, effort, and a portion of our event proceeds to local, and sometimes national, charities.
ARE YOUR BOUTS KID-FRIENDLY?
Yes. We may play rough but our events are certainly fun for the whole family. We love to see kids at our bouts! We project a positive, strong, athletic image because that’s the kind of women we are! This could be a great influence for your young girls, and boys too. This is a sport where all body types are an asset and it’s not just for thin or burly women. It’s a good way to show kids that everyone can be involved in sports and be physically active, as long as you find the right sport to participate in!
